Shadowlands (1993)

Shadowlands (1993)
This movie is beautiful and has lovely acting and gorgeous sets and even terrific writing. The directing, as usual with Attenborough, is first-rate.But Lewis is an infuriating person. That's partly the movie's subject: Lewis is SO repressed, SO insulated, SO narcissistic, that it takes a very aggressive woman and a tragedy to (partly) penetrate his shell. He wrote a book called "Surprised by Joy." This is a reference to Wordsworth; but it seems perfectly apt--and horrifying. You get the sense from this movie that Lewis was so cut off from the emotions that anything--even pain--was better than the numbness in which he spent most of his life. It's sad, and it's pointless.Oddly--or perhaps not oddly at all--Lewis erects Pain into his First Principle of Theology: for Lewis, God does not want us to be happy, He wants us to Suffer, because by Suffering we learn to love.It is pitiful that Lewis had to suffer to learn love.Hard to know why Joy would love him.You don't know whether to laugh or scream at him.Great movie about a pitiable person. $9.94

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is just back from retrieving the Cross of Coronado (a quest he's been on for years) when he gets the news. His father (Sean Connery) has picked up the trail of the Holy Grail, a quest he's been on for years. Unfortunately, Dr. Jones Senior has vanished. So Indiana sets out for Venice to find his father.Once there, he realizes he and his father are in a race for time with the Nazis to find this holy relic. The Nazis want to use it to create an army of invincible soldiers since the cup is rumored to create eternal life from those who drink of it. The problem? The Nazis have key pieces of research the two need to locate and retrieve it. Can they find it first? Will they make it out of this adventure alive? This movie is lighter in tone, much more like the first one then the second one. In fact, I'd say it is the lightest of all three of them with fewer gruesome images then the first two. (No, that doesn't mean this is for the squeamish, however.) The acting is good, especially the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. They look like they are having fun together on screen. The story is clever and keeps you engaged with actions and plenty of laughs along the way. I did feel the action got repetitive in the middle, however. That's pretty much my only complaint. This movie is really nothing more then a mindless action film. But it's very good at it. If you are looking to be entertained, this movie will do it. Our Price:
$9.95

Coupe De Ville

Coupe De Ville
There are so many scenes in this movie that are hysterical, including the scene where Patrick Dempsey's character gets busted by the dean of his school because his brother hung him out to dry, but the scene where the three brothers are arguing over the lyrics to Louie-Louie is one of a kind. Anyone who loves this movie (and it's absolutely one of my all time favorites) will get a grin by this one word...."wang on". Just the perfect family movie. Without being all gooey and sweet. $9.98

Miracle in the Wilderness

Miracle in the Wilderness
I can't believe that this movie has never been released on DVD!!! Especially with all of the fame that Kim Cattrall got with her role in Sex and the City...I would think that it would have created more of a demand for the other things that she has acted in, but somehow this one seems to have been lost along the way somewhere! I first saw this movie on television many years back and later rented it on VHS. It left such an impact on me that I have been waiting and watching for it to come out on DVD ever since. It is a very touching movie...A wonderful twist on the traditional Christmas/Nativity story. Following is a description of the movie (written by Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide):"Derived from Paul Gallico's novella The Snow Goose, this Christmas fable stars Kris Kristofferson as Jericho Adams, a one-time Indian fighter. On Christmas Eve, he, his wife (Kim Cattrall) and their child are kidnapped by a band of revenge-minded Blackfeet warriors being hunted by the U.S. Cavalry. After Jericho's violent escape plans go awry, it's up to his wife to earn their freedom through more peaceful means: by telling the Nativity story to a tribe who has never before heard it." ~~ I hope that some day they will wise up and reissue this movie on DVD, but for now, I guess those of us who have seen it and love it will just have to keep hunting down and wearing out those VHS copies that are still out there! Our Price:
$14.98

Fox and the Hound

Fox and the Hound
I watched it for the second time in my life last night after what I think is 13 years (I'm 18 now), and I'm reminded why I loved this movie so much. Not only are the animations and music great, but the underlying lessons that are taught about trustworthy friendship and the tribulations that life gives us. The world we live in today is constantly telling us that we need to network and make contacts in order to insure ourselves in job security, financial security, or even emotional security. Friendship is meant so that we form bonds that last lifetimes. I've relearned a valuable lesson from this movie. I would also like to recommend my most favority Disney classic, The Jungle Book. This movie also has the same underlying message of the strength of friendship with one of everyone having their own place in the "jungle". I hope that this review has helped those who want to teach their children life lessons wrapped in a Disney box. Our Price:
$24.99
